Trump-Approved Arizona Gubernatorial Candidate Says Jan.6 Capitol Rioters “Invited by Capitol Police”

  • Kari Lake, Trump’s choice for governor of Arizona, claimed the Capitol rioters were “invited by the Capitol police.”

  • Lake is one of the candidates for the 2022 gubernatorial election in Arizona.

  • She received Trump’s approval after suggesting it be added to Mount Rushmore.

A Trump-endorsed Arizona gubernatorial candidate claimed the rioters on Capitol Hill were “invited by Capitol Police,” appearing to be pushing an unproven account that the riot was non-violent.

“They were not charged with a felony, and they were invited by the Capitol Police,” Kari Lake noted in an interview with conservative news network RSBN at former President Donald Trump’s October 10 rally in Des Moines, Iowa.

The United States Capitol Police have been criticized for their handling of the Capitol Riot after some officers were seen posing with rioters for selfies and moving barricades aside for the crowds to advance.

However, there are numerous images and recordings of officers’ injuries to show just how violent the breach of the Capitol building was. During a July 27 House select committee on January 6, several Capitol Hill officers testified about the racism and physical abuse they suffered during the January 6 riot.

According to the DOJ, more than 1,000 assaults have been committed against police officers. However, conservative figures have repeatedly downplayed the violence that took place on Capitol Hill on January 6. In May, Georgia Representative Andrew Clyde compared the Capitol rioters to tourists. And in September, North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn said in an interview that the rioters were mostly “normal people” who “were walking around in a way.”

As of press time, 671 people have been charged with crimes related to the Capitol uprising.

Lake did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Lake is a former TV presenter who Trump approved after asking to have her face added to Mount Rushmore. Separately, Lake also said she would not have certified the 2020 election results and echoed Trump’s baseless claims about voter fraud.

“Considering the amount of information we already had at the time about serious irregularities and issues with the elections, I would not have certified at that time,” Lake said. said in an interview with right-wing outlet One American News Network.

There is no evidence that the Arizona election results were unfairly skewed in favor of President Joe Biden. Arizona GOP officials testified before Congress on Oct. 7 that Biden won “a free, fair and fair election,” according to the results of a Republicans-led vote audit in Maricopa County. However, Trump continued to falsely claim that the audit found “undeniable evidence” of fraud.

In his endorsement of Lake, Trump wrote that “not many people can face fake media like Kari”, adding that she would make the “MAGA movement very proud”.

Trump also took the opportunity to attack Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey over his endorsement of Lake’s candidacy, saying Lake “will do a much better job than RINO Gov. Doug Ducey – will be. not even a competition! “

Ducey fell out of favor with the former president when he certified the state’s election results while appearing to reject an incoming call from Trump. Ducey later tweeted on December 1 that the 15 counties had certified their results and that Arizona was not going to “deprive any voter of the right to vote”

“It’s the law. I have taken an oath to obey it and I take my responsibility seriously,” Ducey tweeted.

Ducey will not stand for re-election in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election due to term limits. Lake is currently facing four other contestants for the GOP nomination.
