Sherman City Council Place 2 candidates prepare for elections
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Elections for Sherman are just over a month away, and one of the seats on the ballot is for City Council Place 2.
Andre Luper and Juston Dobbs will face off in November.
Incumbent Sandra Melton left the seat open after announcing her mayoral bid against David Plyler.
Andre Luper owns a boxing gym in town and is from Sherman, which he says makes him the right fit for the role.
He said he wanted to focus on creating programs for the elderly and children in the community.
âEven the kids who don’t have the opportunity to go to college or get the scholarships, we still want to prepare all of our kids for success,â Luper said. “Let’s put them in a situation where they can all find a job and keep them off the streets.”
Justin Dobbs is a financial advisor at Wells Fargo.
He just finished his second term at the Sherman School Board and left in the spring.
âI’m a real big fan of green spaces,â Dobbs said. âI love the parks. I would like to expand our existing parks, but also leave green spaces. With all of this growth coming, we have to control Sherman’s fate, and we have to chart it the way we want it to look.
But the two candidates agree on one thing: not to forget the residents of Sherman in times of growth.
âWe’re talking about focusing on growth, but we still have to devote the majority of our time to the citizens who are here,â Dobbs said. âThe 80/20 rule is on my mind. Eighty percent of our time needs to be spent on current issues while planning for potential growth, and that’s the remaining 20 percent. “
âI think we build a lot of our city from the outside in,â Luper said. âLet’s go back to the middle. Let’s also build from the middle to the outside. I think these are the little things we need to focus on to make ourselves better as a better city together. “
The election is on November 2.
Early voting begins October 18 and continues through October 29.
The mayor and the municipal council place 1 seat on the ballot.
