Questionnaire: Elvin Dowling, Democrat for US House, District 20 – South Florida Sun Sentinel
I would give the current Congress a C. Despite Republican intransigence, the Democratic majority has been successful in passing meaningful legislation that has achieved significant results for the American people, including halving child poverty. Having said that, however, there are still critical steps that must be taken now to secure the blessings of freedom for ourselves and our posterity. For example, the United States House, by enacting HR 1, the For the People Act of 2021, took a historic step in sustaining democracy. However, its goals of expanding voter registration, strengthening campaign finance rules and ensuring the integrity of elections are already under attack. Opponents prepared to defeat S. 1, his companion in the US Senate. What’s more, HR 4, John Lewis’s voting rights law, is also rushing towards Senate opposition. It’s time to act! There is at least one Democrat on the fence, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and two Republican Senators who can potentially be persuaded. In addition, four other Republicans are running for re-election in 2022 (including Senator Marco Rubio) who may be pressured to support this legislation. As the representative of Florida’s 20th Congressional District, I will use my influence across the state and district to advocate for passage of this legislation in the Senate and work to galvanize the people to lobby the Senate to submit this critical legislation to the president’s office.
