Politicians recruit cultists to destabilize Rivers, says Wike
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike said the state had obtained intelligence reports that some misguided politicians had started recruiting cultists, ex-convicts and thugs in pursuit of their political aspirations for 2023.
The governor said the state government is aware that hotel and entertainment center owners are handing over their premises to politicians and political parties as a convenient base for these political thugs to rally across the ‘State.
Wike, in a state broadcast on Sunday, pointed out that the state government does not take lightly the intelligence reports available to it and therefore would not give any politician, regardless of their past or current position, the chance or opportunity to upset the prevailing peace and security. in the state
This was contained in a statement released by the governor’s press aide, Kelvin Ebiri, on Sunday evening.
The statement read: “Similarly, we will not allow any political party, whether the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party or the Social Democratic Party, to threaten the safety and security of life and property during campaigns by chaos, brutality or violence. .
“As a result, we have already alerted and put security agencies on the trail of these misguided politicians and political party leaders and stopped them in their tracks with the full weight of the law.
“We also wish to warn hotel owners and owners of relaxation centers to take note and refrain from releasing their facilities for politicians and party leaders to use to meet and plot against peace, the safety and security of our state.”
The governor warned that the state government would shut down hotels and other entertainment venues linked to such criminal political activity.
“I want to reiterate our unwavering commitment to preserving the sanctity of life and property across the state and reassure everyone that we will continue to spare no effort to keep Rivers State safe.
“We urge residents to be vigilant during their normal activities and to promptly report any suspicious gatherings or movements in your vicinity to the attention of security agencies for necessary action.”
Governor Wike commended the people of Rivers State for the overwhelming support and solidarity they have extended to his administration since May 2015 to date.
According to him, his administration truly appreciates the trust that the people of the state continue to place in him to advance the collective peace, security and progress of the state.
“I would like to reiterate that our commitment to the shared compact for a safe and prosperous New Rivers State remains stronger than ever and we will not relent or relinquish our resolve to achieve all that we have pledged to achieve for advancing our security, progress, and prosperity before the end of our administration.
“We have done so much and accomplished a lot over the past seven years, but there is still a lot to do. I can assure you that, and as you are witnessing, we will continue to carry out meaningful projects until our last day in office.
“As you all know, the history of our country is going through a very turbulent period, as the level of insecurity in all regions has never been so serious.
“Nevertheless, we thank Almighty God for the high level of peace and security prevailing in Rivers State compared to the near calamity that has befallen most other parts of the country.”
Governor Wike also applauded the security agencies for their efforts, courage and dedication in keeping Rivers State substantially safe and secure in the face of the very daunting operational challenges they face, including the lack of adequate support systems and the motivation of the federal government.
“The government and security agencies have worked hard to ensure the prevailing peace and security, which we are determined to maintain for the benefit of the progress of the state and the well-being of our citizens.”
