Inauguration of the French square named after a murdered Syrian Kurdish politician
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The French city of Lyon inaugurated the square named after Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf, who was killed by Turkish-backed groups in Kurdish-ruled northeastern Syria in October 2019, Tuesday.
The Lyon city council unanimously voted the name of the place named Khalaf last July.
Lyon councilor Sonia Zdorovtzoff, the city’s international relations manager, posted photos of the inauguration and tweeted that Khalaf “has worked throughout his short life for a democratic, plural and decentralized Syria.”
A #Lyon, a place now bears the name of Hevrin Khalaf (1984-2019), a woman of great merit, an exceptional woman: Syrian, Kurdish, engineer, feminist and politician, she worked throughout her short life for a democratic, plural and decentralized Syria. pic.twitter.com/TTcXUq0IAs

Fanny Dubot, mayor of the seventh arrondissement of Lyon, wrote earlier on social networks that the name of the place would be a tribute to Khalaf.
“The # Lyon7 city council has approved the name of Hevrin Khalaf for the square,” he tweeted. âIt is a tribute to the emblematic figure of peace in a country at war. Syrian, Kurdish and feminist, murdered at 35. A tribute.”
The Turkish-backed Ahrar al-Sharqiya group summarily executed Khalaf in mid-October 2019 as part of Ankara’s cross-border offensive. Kurdistan 24 was one of the first media outlets to report on the October 12, 2019 incident.

According to the report of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria last year, a fighter involved in the extrajudicial execution of the Kurdish politician has been jailed. The same report also documented several verified cases of sexual and gender-based violence perpetrated by Turkish-backed armed groups in areas of Turkey occupied by Turkey.
Suad Mustafa, Hevrin Khalaf’s mother, told Kurdistan 24 last year that she wanted those responsible for her daughter’s murder to appear before an international tribunal.

“A war crime has been committed against humanity, and the same person who ordered these activists must be held accountable in a fair court,” she said.
